TOTP AWARDS – Feature on Top Of The Pops includes comment from Shelley Lowry, international TOTP coordinator, who is ‘heavily involved in the award show’ (Guardian Media p.7)

“Today, Lowry is heavily involved in the organisation of the Top of the Pops Award show. “It’s the first in our 38-year history, and is being recorded in Manchester. I’ve had my hands full dealing with the camera, sound and lighting crews coming from abroad, who all have to be accommodated with their directors in special booths at the venue.”

First Top Of The Pops Awards to be held in November – Westlife, Hear’Say and Atomic Kitten will perform at the first Top of the Pops Awards.

The awards will be held at the Manchester Evening News Arena on November 30. They will be presented by Jamie Theakston and a mystery guest. The event will be shown on BBC1 in early December.

TOTP producer and director Chris Cowey said the annual event would rival ITV’s Brit awards. “You’ve got the Brits on one hand and the Smash Hits Awards on the other, this is going to be the best of both worlds.”

Theakston said the event would be his biggest challenge to date. He said: “I’m really excited about it. I have done some big events in the past but I think this is the biggest and the most exciting.”

Viewers will vote for awards in eight of the categories, including Top Pop, Top Rock and Top Newcomer.

Top Of The Pops Awards Launched…Top Of The Pops have announced plans to launch its own awards ceremony in 2001, with the express intention of being bigger than the Brits.

“There’s no bigger name in the world of music television than Top of the Pops and there’ll be no bigger party than the Top of the Pops Awards,” said BBC’s Wayne Garvie. “This is a chance for the whole nation to take part and celebrate the very best in popular music.”

The awards, part of an increasing attempt – which includes the launch of TOTP Magazine and compilation CDs – to brand the show, are planned to be held in Manchester, where TOTP was first launched over thirty-five years ago.

Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports suggest that Madonna is currently negotiating a special with the show to coincide with next month’s visit to the country.
